중고등부 사역 시절때 자주 불렀던 찬양 중 Steve Green 의 People Need the Lord 가 있었다. 절망속에서 헤매는 사람들을 주님께 인도해야 한다는 좋은 메시지이다. 실로는 사람들이 필요로 해서 가는 것 보다 주님께서 명령하시기 때문에 가야 한다는 가사가 더 주님의 사역에 가깝다고 봐야 하겠다. 사람들의 필요에 대한 직접적인 언급은 주님의 사역에서 있지 않았지만 그것은 포괄적인 전제하에 있다고 봐야 하는 것이 옳을 것이다. 주님의 감정에 대해 언급한 구절들에는 주님께서 그들을 보시고 불쌍히 여기사라는 정도이지 그것이 주님의 사역을 특징짓는 구절은 아니다. 하나님께서 보내셨기에 하나님께서 명령하셨기에 나는 순종할 뿐이란 사역이 중심을 이룬다. 사도들을 보내실 때도 하나님께서 자신을 보내신 것 같이 가라고 하셨지 측은지심으로 저 많은 사람들을 보고 불쌍히 여기는 마음으로 사람들의 필요를 충족시키라는 어떤 인간의 깊은 감정에 호소하시는 말씀은 전혀 없다. 밀물처럼 등락달락 거리는 인간의 감정을 따라 가는 사역을 성령의 인도하심으로 포장하는 죄보다 더 큰 죄가 있을까?
사람들과의 의견 충돌을 피하기 위해 가르치지 말라고 말하고 심지어 사역자체에서도 그것이 반영되는 것을 본다. 주님께서 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라는 명령보다 인간의 감정을 따르는 사역은 이미 죽은 사역이고 하나님의 관점보다 인간의 관점을 더 중요히 여기는 잘못된 사역이다.
Just as Father had sent me
There’s a praise song called People Need the Lord by Steve Green which I had sung often as a youth pastor. It has a good message of the fact that we need to reach out to people who are in despair and lost. However, the message that we are go to people because of God’s command is probably closer to the Lord’s ministry than the one that focuses on the needs of people. Even though there was no direct mention of the need of people in Lord’s ministry, it is one that is generally assumed in the background. When it comes to appeal to emotion, the gospels only go as far as mentioning that Jesus had compassion on people, but that does not characterize his ministry as a whole. Jesus merely mentions that he is only doing what he does because God had sent him and that God had commanded him and not much more. When Jesus sends his disciples out he tells them that he is sending them just as God had sent him, not because they ought to feel deep compassion for the lost people and fill their needs. There is no profound appeal to emotion that rises from compassion. Is there a greater sin than packaging one’s ministry as being led by the Spirit when it is merely obeying the ebb and flow of one’s own emotional states?
Sometimes, I see some saying you shouldn’t try to teach people in order to avoid some conflicts of opinion, and that is also reflected in the ministry as well. The ministry that puts people’s emotions above the command to teach that everything Jesus had taught is already a dead ministry, and a wrongheaded one for sure if it values the opinions of men above God’s.
