Contrasting foundations for morality

— English

In the West, the classical philosophers, post-Christianity, thought of morality as a core part of virtue in reflection of the belief of imago dei.  However, in the East Asia, the morality is now more often seen as a part of statecraft, a code only intended to make people more obedient to their rulers. This Machiavellian juxtaposition of Confucian ideals has been tacitly accepted by the populace, and I think that is one of the main reasons why the social changes have been so swift. Without a full appreciation for Confucianism as a theory, ignorant progressives have done much to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Social changes are often hinged by a philosophical, and referential, position that society holds to, and the fact that Asian countries seem to have been following the West, almost mindlessly, without due consideration of traditional moral implications (but accommodating to Western influences under the banner of progress) is evidenced by the fact that traditional views have been heavily labeled as being backward and generally antithetical to any progress in all aspects of life. This was sparked by Meiji Reformation in Japan, which happened among a people-group living in an island long oppressed by self-doubt about its own identity and self-worth, always compared against the continental culture.

As seen in Korea, it doesn’t help that most of classical literature were written in hanja and the disciplines of philosophy or classical literature is simply marginalized as being “non-productive” discipline. This kind of trend is deeply troubling, given the fact that young people are increasingly adopting materialistic view of life, whilst studying hard in philosophical disciplines, which was a harsh experience for them when they had to memorize in a rote fashion to pass a test.  Knowledge without seeing no relevance to their lives has led to resentment towards the very knowledge that can allow them genuine change and progress towards the future.

Issues with South Korea, from investor’s point of view

Korean translation available in the bottom)

— English

There were some memorable points that Jim Rogers, a well-known American investor, has pointed out about Korea, and why there would be no future for it if it continues this way. (Sub-points are my personal reflections.)

  • 3 companies hold the 50% of the national GDP.
    • In the early days of post-war modernization, the political leaders allowed a full government support of only a handful companies, and those companies have managed to maintain a tight relationship with the government and monopolize on the Korean economy.
  • Too many young people are only seeking to get a government job. There’s future only if young people are willing to challenge the status quo with new ideas.
    • Two to three generations of people have experienced how unstable the market has been, so Korean people in general have been tamed to believe that the government job is the only stable job for their children to have.
  • The birthrate is too low and it will have a significant effect in the labor market.
